Warning issued for Las Vegas

Sunny, hot and gusty conditions expected today have led the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning and a fire weather watch for the Las Vegas area.

An unseasonably strong Pacific storm will approach the northern California Coast today, the weather service said.

Ahead of the low, strong south to southwest winds with low relative humidity values will occur within southern Nevada and northwest Arizona this afternoon and evening, forecasters said.



Even stronger winds, along with continued low humidity values are expected on Wednesday as the low shifts east across the Great Basin, they said.

The Red Flag Warning will remain in effect from noon to 9 p.m. tonight for strong winds and low relative humidity. Winds will be south to southwest 15 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 40 mph today, forecasters said.

On Wednesday, winds will be from the southwest at 20 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph, they said.

Humidity values will be between 5 percent and 12 percent on both today and Wednesday, they said.

Temperatures are expected to climb to a high of around 107 degrees today, they said.

At 5:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 86 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 76 degrees. The record low was 55 degrees, set in 1941.

Around the valley just before 6 a.m., temperatures were 85 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 83 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 82 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 92 degrees by 9 am., to 102 degrees by noon and reach a high of 107 degrees by 4 pm., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 102 degrees and the record high was 115 degrees, set in 1994.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 106 degrees by 7 p.m., to 99 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 92 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Wednesday's morning low will be 83 degrees and Wednesday's high will climb to 102 degrees, they said.
