Push for foreign Las Vegas visitation pays dividends

Las Vegas visitors from South Korea and China increased by 60 and 38 percent last year, respectively, while visitors from Canada, Australia, Germany and France increased by more than 20 percent for each country, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said Friday.
Last year’s 6.7 million foreign visitors spent $6.6 billion in Southern Nevada, accounting for 27 percent of tourism revenue. That figure is growing as local officials step up efforts to attract foreign tourists who tend to stay longer and spend more money than their domestic counterparts — a trend that’s helping recession-battered Las Vegas.
The average international visitor spent $1,011 on nongambling activities compared with $627 spent by the average domestic visitor, according to the authority’s annual visitor profile.
Within 10 years, the authority hopes to increase to 30 percent the percentage of visitors from other countries, which rose to 18 percent last year from 14 percent in 2009.
The authority attributes the increase to more aggressive marketing efforts, favorable exchange rates, improvements in foreign economies and an overall increase in foreign tourism in the United States.
“When the U.S. gains in international travel, Las Vegas typically mirrors, if not exceeds that increase,” said Kevin Bagger, the authority’s senior director of marketing.
The authority and McCarran International Airport officials are working to secure more international nonstop flights to Las Vegas.
Since April, Las Vegas has hosted new nonstop flights from Guadalajara, Mexico and Manchester, England. British Airways has expanded capacity on its nonstop flights from London by 18 percent, and France’s XL Airways reinstituted a seasonal nonstop flight from Paris.
Tourism officials are pressing the federal government to ease visa restrictions in China, a booming economy where visitors to the U.S. are expected to increase 219 percent by 2015, according to federal estimates. South Koreans have flocked to Las Vegas and other U.S. tourism destinations after visa requirements were lifted by the United States in 2008.
The authority has contracts with 15 marketing offices used to promote Las Vegas in more than 70 countries, including growth areas such as South Korea, China and India. Up to 80 percent of Las Vegas’ foreign visitors come from Canada, Mexico and the United Kingdom.

he fatal fight early Saturday morning on the Las Vegas

Police arrested Victor Quijano 25-year-old  in connection with Elena's death. Quijano, also of Las Vegas, has been charged with murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder with a deadly weapon and possession of a dangerous weapon.

The incident allegedly began when Quijano and his friends had a run-in with another group of people at the Miracle Mile Shops at Planet Hollywood.

A man, later identified as Steven Velasquez, allegedly said something about a female in Quijano's group, prompting a fight in the mall area, according to the arrest report. Security diffused the fight by ordering Velasquez's group to leave.

Warning issued for Las Vegas

Sunny, hot and gusty conditions expected today have led the National Weather Service to issue a Red Flag Warning and a fire weather watch for the Las Vegas area.

An unseasonably strong Pacific storm will approach the northern California Coast today, the weather service said.

Ahead of the low, strong south to southwest winds with low relative humidity values will occur within southern Nevada and northwest Arizona this afternoon and evening, forecasters said.

Electric Daisy Carnival 101 in las vegas

The biggest dance music festival in the U.S. the Electric Daisy Carnival arrives this weekend, and it’s expected to bring many of the world’s best DJs, 250,000 spectators and more glow sticks than we’ll try to count.

But it’s also bringing a good deal of controversy. At last year’s festival in Los Angeles, a 15-year-old girl died of a drug overdose and more than 100 others were hospitalized, many for drug complications. For this year’s festival, the minimum age has been raised to 18, and promoters say they will take additional security measures, but just last weekend a smaller carnival event in Dallas left a 19-year-old dead of a drug overdose.

Like it or not, Ecstasy is part of dance-festival culture, and although it’s hard to hold organizers responsible for the safety of guests who sneak in illegal drugs, the eyes of the outside world will be on promoter Insomniac beginning at 8 Friday night.

Electric Daisy Carnival, the biggest dance-music festival in the country. It’s taking place in Las Vegas for the first time this weekend.

Some are here a lot, sure. But a lot of the choice names will be setting foot in Southern Nevada for the first time. Plus, seeing Tiësto at the Joint is not the same thing as seeing him in a crowd of 80,000 under the stars.

As of Thursday, three-day passes ($215 plus fees, or $500 plus fees for VIP) were still available. Single-day Fridays and Saturdays are sold out, but Sunday tickets ($100 plus fees, $200 plus fees for VIP) were still up for grabs.

Take Intestate 15 north and exit to the right on Speedway Boulevard. Or, take Nellis Boulevard north, then make a left on Checkered Flag Lane.

Nope, that’s happening. Who wants to dance when it’s 100-plus degrees during the day? Just make sure to get some shut-eye before you get to the speedway, so you don’t sleep through your favorite act.

All 40,000 spots worth. Get your vehicle out by 10 a.m. to avoid a towing charge. Or, if you don’t feel like driving, hop on the carnival’s shuttle at Circus Circus, Golden Nugget, Hard Rock Hotel, Mandalay Bay, Mirage, Monte Carlo or Palms. Three-day passes are $60, single days are $30 to $40 (more information is at shuttlelasvegas.com/edc). Or you could round up five friends and $6,000 and splurge on a round-trip helicopter ride to the speedway and back (flymaverick.com). Or not.

Yep. Electric Daisy Carnival is 18-plus, although VIP areas are restricted to those 21 and older.

Do bring: Your ID, cellphone, earplugs, small backpacks (10x10 max) and sealed cigarettes and gum packs. Don’t bring: Chairs, coolers, umbrellas, pens, pacifiers, eyedrops, stuffed animals, food, drinks . actually,

Catastrophic Fire Possible on Mount Charleston

The scars from last summer's Cathedral fire can still be seen at Mount Charleston. UNLV scientists believe each year brings higher chances for a catastrophic fire in that community.
UNLV graduate students measure the diameter of trees at a research plot. Overseeing them is ecologist Scott Abella.
Stumps show where two large trees grew 100 years ago. The woods are now filled with trees which may be too much of a good thing.
"Major increase in the density of the forest, so a lot more trees today than a hundred years ago, so a lot more fuel. When we do have a fire today, it can pretty much take everything out," said Dr. Scott Abella, UNLV ecologist.
Abella's team hikes to the starting point of last year's Cathedral fire. Only the underbrush should have burned, instead, tall, dead trees remain.
"Because we've been so good at actually stopping these fires, we've had this tremendous fuel buildup," he said.
UNLV's scientific data shows wildfire fuel once burned off every two years. Without that, Abella says it's time to cut down some of these smaller trees.
"It actually costs about several hundred dollars per acre. These trees are fairly small. They need to be cut. There's very little market for them. It's not like we can get lumber from these trees. Again, in the long run. That's much cheaper than continuing to fight these fires," he said.
Abella's students keep studying Mount Charleston's forests, hoping to pinpoint the right areas to create fire breaks trying to prevent future catastrophic blazes.
"I still see myself collecting as much data as I can, researching, trying to get the forest to mimic the past forests, what it used to be like, and trying to restore it," said Ken Chittick, UNLV graduate student.
"I want to protect the forest and really all wilderness for future generations," said Sylvia Tran, UNLV graduate student.
The Mount Charleston Lodge tells 8 News NOW this past weekend was their first big tourist weekend of the summer. Last July's Cathedral fire started with a campfire. That gives an additional urgency to fire safety on the mountain.
